One of the hot topics in sustainability this year has been circularity. It’s descriptive of how resources can be best utilised over and over in society and the economy. With over 8 billion people on this Earth, we can’t afford to waste stuff anymore. The old linear economy going from production to landfill is as archaic as a medieval midden heap in a castle bailey.
One of the primary rules of circularity is that everything that breaks should be repaired. Next time you go out to buy something, make sure it’s repairable. These well-known companies are producing stuff that they will repair forever, sometimes for free, but not always when it’s wear and tear or other damage:
- Patagonia and Paramo – outdoor gear
- Nudie – jeans
- Kenwood, Dualit – kitchen appliances
- Ebac – dehumidifiers, washing machines
- Fairphone, Framework – tech
These things are of course expensive, but you can buy them second-hand and still have them repaired.
There are of course many more. We’re building up a list of them, so please send in any tips.
