Hi everyone

Happy Friday! Welcome back to your weekly update from the EcoCounts team. At EcoCounts, our mission is simple: helping everyone measure, understand and reduce their carbon footprint in ways that fit naturally into everyday life. Sustainable change doesn’t require turning your life upside down—it starts with gathering as a community, testing practical habits, and sharing what works!

Here is what’s happening this week across our community:

WHAT’S ON

Mark Your Calendar: St Luke’s Autumn Fair (Saturday, 17th October)

It’s just around the corner! Join us from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at St Luke’s Church. Live Carbon Counting: Sit down with our data team to run your household numbers through our new dashboard in a friendly, zero-judgment space. EcoTip Competition: To keep things lively while people wait for their turn with the data team, we’re running an on-the-spot EcoTip contest! Come prepared to submit your favourite unglamorous habit hack to win some community love!

Cooking Classes, Trivia & Bike Discos: Planning Upcoming Events

During Monday’s meet-up, our events coordinator Joana led a creative brainstorm on where to take our seasonal programming next. A few ideas currently on the table:

  • A bicycle dynamo-powered disco and low-carbon cooking workshops (with delicious vegan options).
  • Seasonal eco-themed pub quizzes and team debates.
  • Short community-led spotlight talks on Monday nights covering local and global climate topics.
  • A potential Halloween/late-October film screening to follow up on the success of our summer season.

Have a workshop or event you’d love to see happen? Drop in on Monday and tell us!

Next Meet-up: Monday, 5th October, from 6:00 pm upstairs at St Luke’s Church. Come along, meet the team and share your thought!

COMMUNITY & TEAM UPDATES

Welcome, Idil!

A warm welcome to Idil, a university law student with a passion for conservation and trusteeship who joined us this week. She is helping us explore best practices from other grassroots organisations on how to run accessible, high-turnout community meet-ups.

Calling Local Students

With the autumn term underway across London universities, we are designing flexible, project-based volunteer roles (from literature reviews to communications) that fit around study schedules. If you are a student looking to make an impact, reach out!!

Help Us Shape This Newsletter (We’d Love Your Feedback!)

Our writing team has been working hard behind the scenes to make this weekly dispatch as engaging, useful, and relevant as possible. What sections do you enjoy most? What would you like to see more of—local events, interviews, or practical data tips? Hit reply and share your honest thoughts with us!

GOOD READ

Our writer Matthew has just finished a comprehensive two-part investigation into one of the simplest climate tools on the planet: the bicycle.

Part 1: What makes bikes genuinely greener? Exploring embodied materials, production lifecycles, and how two wheels compare to public transit.

Part 2: The culture and longevity of cycling—from maintenance culture to why keeping a vintage frame on the road matters.

Did you know?

The Elizabeth line carries more passengers daily than the single busiest motorway corridor in North America. High-capacity rail is urban climate policy at its best.

WHAT WE NEED

Thanks to our lovely community, we now have a pre-loved laptop! Find out below how you too can help.

Volunteer Manager

As EcoCounts expands, we are looking for an organised, people-focused Volunteer Manager to support our community networks, welcome new faces, and coordinate project roles. If you love bringing people together, we want to hear from you!

A Filming Light

To help our social media and video team create crisp, informative clips of our workshops and meet-ups, we’re on the hunt for a spare or pre-loved video light. If you have one sitting unused in an office or cupboard, let us know!

Trustees & Treasurer

We are still recruiting a long-term Treasurer and Board Trustees to help steer EcoCounts’ strategy, compliance, and governance.

Carbon Footprint Data Collectors

Keen to learn how household emissions are measured and help run our dashboard during community pop-ups like the Autumn Fair? No specialist background needed, we’ll show you the ropes!
