Hi everyone,
Happy Thursday! Welcome back to your weekly update from the EcoCounts team.
With our 3rd issue under the new writing team comes advice on sustainable practice, a recap of last week's events and important updates on our operation.
We have an exciting week up ahead of us, so here's what's on across our community:
WHAT’S ON
Upcoming Event: Policy Advocacy Talk & Discussion (Monday, 7th September)
Next Monday, we are expecting a visit from a retired EU policymaker! He will be discussing the kinds of policy advocacy that can make a tangible impact at both local and central government levels. There will also be opportunities for Q&A and open group discussion on how we can collaborate and take collective action. Just drop us an email if you wish to join the discussion.
Last Saturday’s Screening: Six Inches of Soil- a 2024 documentary that discussed the farmers, food systems and ideas behind regenerative agriculture in the UK.
The film followed three British farmers standing up to the industrial food system in order to transform how our food is produced and consumed. It tackled themes of food poverty, affordability, agroecology- an approach to farming that uses 'regenerative' farming techniques that work with rather than against nature- and the relationship between food and health. The film leaves you to ponder what a more sustainable food system would actually look like.
Upcoming Screenings: This Saturday marks our final Mystery Eco-Screening so make sure you dont miss out on the opportunity! If you do want to know what film it is, you can find us on NextDoor where we will be posting the film name. A huge thank you to everyone who attended and made these events possible.

EXCITING UPDATES
We recently recruited three UCL under and postgraduate students to do a review of the academic literature on carbon footprints in order to answer questions like: 'How are carbon footprints calculated and estimated?'; 'What benefits and issues occur in personal allowances schemes and pesonal trading?, etc. We are excited to share that we have reached the first major milestone in this review and plan to increase the team size in the next year so we can combine all the articles and publications found into a report.
WHO COUNTS
(Got a quick tip, a repair project, or a realistic eco-habit? We want to hear it!)
  • This week's inspiration: Inspired by Six inches of Soil, we're highlighting the ways in which we as consumers can support more sustainable practices even with limited budgets and the constraints of city life.
  • Your choices don't have to be large scale or life-altering- it could be as simple as supporting locally-sourced supermarkets, reducing the amount of ultra-processed foods you purchase or even batch-cooking large portions in the week to reduce eating out or multiple shopping trips (this also saves money!)
  • If you have the space and time, you could even commit to growing some of your produce. Potatoes are one root vegetable relatively easy to grow with limited energy.

  • Over to you: Do you have any useful tips for sustainable food consumption? Reply to this email and let us know, we’d love to feature your advice in upcoming issues!
NEW FROM VOLUNTEERS
  • Read our latest piece: Just Turn Up
Dive into our latest community reflection on why human connection is the real antidote to climate overwhelm and mass consumerism. Read the full article here: No Membership, No Logo, No Password: Just Turn Up - EcoCounts.
WHAT WE NEED
  • Tech & Coding Volunteers: We are currently building an app to help everyday people calculate and easily reduce their carbon footprint. If you have coding/development skills (or know someone who does) and want to get involved, get in touch!
  • Join our Board as a Trustee: We are looking for new Trustees to help steer EcoCounts as we grow. If you have experience in governance, strategy, finance, or simply a deep commitment to grassroots climate action, check out the role on our website or get in touch. Get Involved - EcoCounts

  • Volunteer Manager: Love connecting with people and organizing community efforts? We are looking for a Volunteer Manager to help coordinate, support, and grow our wonderful network of volunteers. Head over to our website to apply or reply to this email to find out more. Get Involved - EcoCounts
  • Autumn Events &Workshops: As our summer film season winds down, we are planning our autumn calendar. Do you have a skill, workshop idea, or topic you’d love to share with the community? Reply to this email to connect with our events coordinator, Joana
 NOTICE
Reach Volunteer, the volunteer recruitment website we use has recently announced that they are unfortunately closing. This means we will now be putting all our volunteer adverts on the local council Volunteer Action websites for Islington, Camden, Hackney and Westminster.
Enjoy the rest of your week, and see you on Saturday!
Warmly,
The EcoCounts Team
